Cardiac Orienting Response in Infants Can Indicate Alcohol-Related Developmental Delay

A relatively simple and inexpensive test based on heart rate patterns has been shown to effectively identify infants at risk of developmental delay due to prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). Researchers supported by NIAAA found that cardiac orienting response (COR), a measure of heart rate decrease after being exposed to novel stimuli, in infants was a better predictor of developmental delay by 1 year of age than a widely used developmental test (the Bayley Scales of Infant Development-II).
